1964 Ford Galaxie 500

'64 Ford Galaxie 500In the early days of American space explorations, the world watched as the country’s eyes were fixed on the heavens. With President Kennedy’s vow to reach the moon, a goal which was realized not too long thereafter, so began America’s love affair with the idea of reaching a better understanding of the mysteries that abounded among the stars that so brilliantly twinkled in the skies above. In 1959, Ford rolled out the Galaxie, and the name of this classic car was surely appropriate for the times. The car cruised through the 1960s and into the 1970s, before coming to an end in 1974. Built in Chicago, IL and Wayne, MI, these cars reflected pride in American accomplishments of the day.

'64 Ford Galaxie 500The second generation of the Ford Galaxie began in 1960 and continued until 1964. In that time period, several different engines and body styles were used in the Galaxie. The final year of the second generation model was due in part to the weight of the car. Orignally, the model weighed in at 3,400 pounds, and although a few changes shaved a couple hundred pounds off the weight, it still proved problematic for the breaks. Many crashes as a result of brake failure in previous years resulted in a better check from Ford’s quality control. With this 1964 model, the Galaxie gained a reputation for being not only comfortable, but also reliable and affordable, making them even more popular.

Two engines, a six-cylinder and a V8 were available for the 1964 Galaxie 500, which featured custom trim, chrome fender, window frames, and a chrome strip. An upgrade to the Galaxie 500 XL had a few features, such as bucket seats. Three popular body styles included the sedan, hardtop, and convertible. The Galaxie 500 had a top speed of 92 miles per hour  and a 0-60 time of 16.6 seconds (for the 2-door hardtop). Of course, those numbers fluctuated with the addition of other options or among different body styles.
