Car commercials and animated characters have gone hand-in-hand since car commercials hit the small screen. From Snoopy and the Peanuts Gang to modern anime, animated characters are useful tools for selling cars of all makes and models. These are a few of the more memorable cartoon characters and the cars they sold:

'56 Nash RamblerDisney Characters and 1955 Nash Rambler: Back in the mid-century, Disney characters played big roles in big commercials. Jiminy Cricket actually sang a version of his iconic “When You Wish Upon a Star” song for the Nash Rambler. Pegleg Pete, the mean cat, also was featured in a spot for Nash.

Charlie Brown and Ford: In the 1960s, the Peanuts Gang worked hard to sell the Ford Falcon. They appeared in print and television advertisements for the popular Ford Falcon. The car and the details were always center stage, with Peanuts characters making comments on the side about the Ford Falcon like a little Greek chorus.

Dr. Seuss and Mazda: One of the recent trends in car advertising is cross-promotion. When movies are released, many car makers will pair with the characters in the new movies. One cross-promotional event was with Mazda and the Lorax in early 2012. This pairing caused some controversy because Mazda used the environment-loving Lorax to sell the Mazda CX-5, its SUV, rather than a greener, gas-sipping model.

2011 Chevy Camaro

Speedy Gonzalez and Volkswagen: In 2006, Looney Tunes Speedy Gonzalez was tapped to represent the Volkswagen GTI. Volkswagen is known for its funny commercials, and this was no exception as Speedy G dropped trou and mooned the folks in the car behind him.

Transformers and the Chevy Camaro: Once the new Camaro made its film debut in the 2007 Transformers movie, it was only time that the tables were turned and Bumblebee and his crew started hawking the Chevys. Kids and adults everywhere drooled when they saw the updated muscle car. When the ads debuted, those same kids could beg their parents to buy one every time they saw Bumblebee and Optimus Prime on the small screen between their favorite shows.
