Chrysler Imperial – Luxury Brand

Chrysler Imperial: For the most part, over the last few decades the classic “big boat” has kind of disappeared from the roadways.

But there was once a time when people would tool around the city and down the highways and byways in big, powerful, comfortable cars that admittedly didn’t go very far on a gallon of gas.

And, it was not uncommon for somebody in the neighborhood to pull down the armrest, lean to the right, and drive the boat with the left hand alone.

One car that would fit the description of the big boat of the classic era was the Imperial, a Chrysler brand.

The Chrysler Imperial brand was around from 1955 through the 1975 model year, and it was brought back briefly from 1981 through 1983. It was a top-of-the-line luxury car and we’re going to take a look at the 1974 and 1975 models.

During these last two years of the first run the car was offered as a two-door Crown coupe, a two-door hardtop and a four-door hardtop. These cars were built on the Chrysler C-body platform, and they were powered by a 440 cubic inch Wedgehead V-8 engine. The transmission in the 1974 and 1975 Imperial was a 3-speed TorqueFlite A727 automatic.

1974 marked the 50th anniversary of the Chrysler Corporation, and in celebration they created a 50th anniversary version of the two-door Imperial Le Baron Crown Coupe. There were only 57 of these cars manufactured so if you can locate one of them you are adding a very rare motor vehicle to your collection.

Actually, all 1974 and 1975 Chrysler Imperials are rather rare. There were a total of 14,483 units produced in 1974, and just 8830 1975 Imperials rolled off the assembly lines.

The Imperial line provided motorists of the day with an alternative to the Cadillac and the Lincoln, and many people sorely miss the era of the big American boats.
