Rent-a-Racer: Hertz and the Muscle Car Era1968 AMX In 1966, the Hertz Corporation through a wrench into traditional car rental programs with the Rent-a-Racer program. The company partnered with Carroll Shelby who created a hot rod Mustang that Hertz could rent to customers who not only wanted a rental car, but one that would be a joy to drive. You can no longer rent a 1966 Shelby Mustang, but you might be able to find some of the remaining 1000 GT350H models that were original built for the program.

1966 Chevy CorvetteAlong with the Mustangs, Hertz included a few other options in the Rent-a-Racer program. The other hot rods that customers could rent included the AMC AMX, Chevy Corvette, and Jaguar XKE. Whether customers rented the AMC AMX, the Mustang GT350H, or any of the other options, customers did not always return the rental cars with their base engines. If you have ever returned a rental car, you know that they are not thoroughly inspected before you leave the lot. And, if you think about the fact that computers were not used make reservations, it would have been very easy for renters to get away with removing the fast engines for something basic and slow.

Now, you can no longer rent an AMC AMX or a Shelby GT350H, but you can rent from the Adrenaline Collection, which does include a Mustang that resembles the originals from 1968. The current model is designed by Penske, but there were some Shelby designed 2006 models that can be purchased on the secondary market. You might even be able to find a 1968 Shelby. All of the models are designed in the Hertz black and gold.

1969 Ford Shelby MustangWhile the Shelby Rent-a-Racer cars from 1968 are difficult to find, the AMC AMX is even rarer. Because the AMX was only made for a few years and so few were actually made (less than 20,000), the specific cars that were used by the rental car company are practically impossible to found. Many experts believe there is only one rent-a-AMX left in existence today.
