Every year, the oldest cars in the world, and their devoted owners, gather in England to make the trek from London to Brighton. The Veteran Car Run, held early each November, sees hundreds of pre-1905 cars make the journey in a parade of automobile antiquity.

The Run itself is even older than most of the vehicles participating. According to the Royal Automobile Club, which sponsors the event, the Veteran Car Run commemorates the Emancipation Run, which took place on November 14, 1896. The original run was held to celebrate the passing of a law that raised road speed limits in the UK from four to a whopping 14 miles an hour.

There are a handful of truly once-in-a-lifetime pilgrimages that all classic car fans need to make at some point, and without question one of them is a visit to the Royal Automobile Club’s London to Brighton Veteran Car Run.

This year 505 classic cars were entered, the first time that as many as 500 cars graced the starting line since 1998. A 1896 Salveson Steamer that is owned by collector John Brydon was afforded the honor of being the first car to take off for Brighton, which is 60 miles from the Hyde Park launching point. 433 of the 505 cars that started were able to finish the route, and this is a rather impressive percentage considering the fact that the “newest” car in the field was 116 years old and the baby of the group was 105.
