'72 Dodge PolaraFor many years, the cars that have been used as police cars have been large sedans. In most communities it was common to see Dodge Diplomats in the 1980s and today it is common to see Ford Crown Victorias. While most communities have similar cars, there are some places that have stepped out of the large sedan model and moved into sports cars and other unconventional police car models. These are a few of the coolest:

AMC Javelin: Pony cars, especially Mustangs, have been used for many years because they are speedy and affordable. The very first pony car that was ever used in a police fleet was the AMC Javelin. In 1971, the Alabama Highway Patrol needed something quick and affordable, so they bought over 100 AMC Javelin police cars in 1971 and 1971. They lasted until 1979 and one is housed in a museum in Alabama.

Dodge Charger: If you speed on a major highway in Michigan, you will most likely get caught by a state trooper driving a Dodge Charger. Currently, these are the police cars that all other police departments envy. They are intimidating, fast, and about as cool as it gets, expect for the police officers in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan who get to drive Corvettes.

It was easy for police officers to catch speeders, not because of the speed, but because no one suspected a Camaro would be a police cruiser.

Chevy Bel Air: The classic black and white looks perfect on a Chevy Bel Air from 1955. With the big gold star on the doors, the 1955 Chevy Bel Air looks aggressive and ready to catch the bad guys.

Mercedes Benz M-Class SUV: Police officers in Alabama know how to pick great police cars. In Tuscaloosa, Alabama, the police officers get to drive Mercedes Benz SUVs. The SUVs are made in Alabama, so they are much more affordable than most would expect.
