The Gilmore Car Museum

Gilmore MuseumThe Gilmore Museum in Hickory Corners, Michigan showcases the history of automobiles with over 300 vehicles on display. The museum has its beginnings in a gift given from a wife to a husband. Genevieve Gilmore gave her husband Donald a 1920 Pierce-Arrow for his birthday in 1963. Donald restored the vehicle and found a new hobby working with classic cars. Before long, the Gilmores owned over 30 historic automobiles and moved their collection to a 90-acre property, complete with historic barns to house them.

On July 31, 1966, the Gilmore Museum opened its doors to the public for the first time. At Genevieve’s urging, Donald had established a non-profit organization based on his car collection and turned it into a museum so that the public could enjoy automotive history.

Gilmore MuseumToday, you can visit the museum and view the hundreds of cars on display in eight historic barns. You will also find a fully recreated gas and service station from the 1930s, a working double-decker red bus from London, a train station, and three miles of paved roads. Along with the cars, the museum displays over 75 antique and vintage pedal cars, one of the country’s largest collections of hood ornaments, and an impressive assortment of name badges from classic cars.

Gilmore MuseumThe Gilmore Museum also includes several special exhibits on a rotating basis as well as its regular exhibits. Currently, the museum is showcasing the ultimate muscle cars from Detroit car makers, the cars of General Motors, 13 Hudsons from the Hostetler Collection, and a display showing the importance of automobiles in the migrations of the Great Depression.

The Gilmore Museum is open year-round and visitors can enjoy the displays seven days a week. It is closed on major holidays, such as Easter, Christmas, New Year’s Day, and Thanksgiving. Admission is just $10 for adults, $9 for seniors, and free for children under six. There are discounts for groups and for AAA members.
