The 1977 MGB is a unique- looking foreign car which certainly stands apart from the more stereotypical American classic cars from the 1970s. Assembled under the direction of British car maker MG Cars, this sports car is one classified as a roadster. Succeeding its predecessor, the MGA, the MGB was first introduced in 1962 and had a respectable run before it came to an end in 1980. Relatively few were produced, totaling about 399,000 units in its 19-year run.
From the start, this was an attractive- looking 2-door, 2-seater, but for a short time, a small back seat was an available option. A four-speed transmission worked with the 1,798 cc engine. The wheelbase measured in at 60 inches, and it was 153 inches in length, which has a full 3 inches shorter than the MGA, which may not seem like much, but such a difference can sometimes have a huge impact on passenger comfort. Although it was shorter, its designers made great use of space, and in the end, the MGB afforded more passenger and luggage space.
The model began suffering some setbacks during its years of production due to regulations, such as those on emissions. The regulations meant the model underwent redesigns that in essence reduced horsepower, negatively impacted its handling, and removed the anti-roll bar for standard versions.
The last MGB Roadster rolled off the production line in Abingdon, Enlgand in 1980. As fate would have it, that very car found a home in the Abingdon County Hall Museum in 2011. It remains there in the main gallery for anyone interested in visiting the car in person.
