Cars You Should Know, But Probably Don’t
In the world of cars, there are hard-to-find, rare, and super-secret-rare. The hard-to-find and rare cars can actually be found, but there are not many of them available. An example of a hard-to-find car is a mint, stock Honda CRX-Si – they’re out there, but you really have to look. A rare car is the 1961 Ferrari 250GT Spyder – these exist but there are only a handful and they are extremely expensive. A super-secret-rare car is one that only a few people know about, because there might be one and it usually lives in a personal collection in some unusual place. These are some of those super-secret-rare cars that you should know about, but probably do not know:
Buick Grand National Le Sabre: Most people have heard of the Buick Grand National, which was a souped up Regal. While there were close to 30,000 Buick Grand National Regals produced, there were only 117 or 112 Buick Grand National Le Sabres produced (GM gives both numbers). Both models the Le Sabre and the Regal versions of the Grand Nationals were produced in the 1980s. The Buick Grand National Le Sabre only came in black or white, with the exception of one that was painted red. They were raced in NASCAR and they were sold to a few lucky souls. Even if you happened to see one on the road, you would not even realize you were seeing a super-secret-rare Le Sabre, unless you looked at the louvred rear quarter window or got close enough to see a Grand National Logo somewhere on the car.
Toyota Mega Cruiser: This vehicle looks like the lovechild between a Land Cruiser and a Hummer. There were a handful of these produced for actual drivers, with the majority of them made for the military in 1995. The Mega Cruiser was loaded with a 4.1 liter 4 cylinder turbo diesel engine. The comfy, yet slow Cruiser was designed to be energy efficient despite weighing over three tons. It was so wide that four people could comfortably sit across the back seat. Good luck finding one.
Ferrari Estate: This is a Ferrari stationwagon. Really. A Ferrari stationwagon. You will only find seven on the entire globe, if you can find one at all. The Ferrari Estate was created in 1996 and they had (or still have – if they are still around) a V12 engine that got over 440 horsepower. You might be able to find one if you travel to Brunei.
