El Camino: Did you know?
The Chevy El Camino is a special car that defined a special time. This car-turned-pickup filled a niche market in a way that few other vehicles could. Defined as a “coupe-utility vehicle,” the El Camino was found in the fields of California to the drag strips in the Midwest. Today the car finds comfort in the garages of the men and women who just cannot escape the 1970s and want to relive their glory days.
While it might have seemed like everyone had a cool, single uncle who owned a Chevy El Camino in the 1970s, it turns out that some famous celebrities also managed to hold titles to El Caminos, too. These are some of the celebrities who were proud owners of El Caminos:
President Bill Clinton: At an event with GM employees, the former president shared that his 1970 El Camino actually had astroturf in the truck bed.
Reggie Jackson: The baseball player collected Elkies, but they sadly were destroyed in a fire and could not be restored. The former baseball player still has a large collection of muscle cars – mostly Chevys.
Frank Sinatra: Rumor has it that “Ol’ Blue Eyes” had a 1972 El Camino and that he sold it for $50,000. It is easy to imagine him cruising down the Southern California streets in a smooth Elky.
Daryl Hannah: The actress best known for playing a mermaid owned the most unusual El Camino. Her sexy Elky was converted to run on biodiesel fuel; interestingly, this car has inspired other to convert their El Caminos into eco-friendly, green cars.
Dwight Yoakam: The country crooner has an El Camino that has been tricked out to the extreme. Rumor has it that his Elky has never been touched up on the exterior, other than the addition of a dark window tint. All of the work was done under the hood making the truck an ironic blend of trash on the outside and power on the inside. The Chevy El Camino made an appearance on the back of one of his albums.
