Most Expensive Car Sold at Auction: ’57 Testa Rossa

Last month, at a California auction that is held in conjunction with the famous Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, the record for the most expensive car ever sold at auction was broken.  Beating the previous $12 million record that was paid for a 1957 Ferrari Testa Rossa in Maranello, Italy in 2009, the new record was given to yet another 1957 Ferrari Testa Rossa.  This one sold for a jaw-dropping $16.4 million!

This 1957 Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa racecar has a 3.0L V-12 engine that produces 300hp and a 4 speed manual transmission.  It was the first Testa Rossa ever built and served as the prototype for all subsequent Testa Rossas that came after it.  It won first place at the 2006 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance based on looks alone. This vehicle also has a 8 year racing history in both Europe and the United States.

While this elegant and fast vehicle currently holds the coveted spot of most expensive car sold at auction, it does not hold the most expensive car sold record. Many private sales of these vehicles go for up to twice the price of this vehicle.
