Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme

The Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme is one of the classic nameplates from the legendary brand that lasted for over 100 years. The mid-sized Cutlass Supreme came out in 1966 and lasted for five generations, through 1997 when the Intrigue replaced all of the Cutlass models.

The first Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme was a trim level in 1966, for the hardtop, four-door sedan. The high-level Supreme trim included a plush interior with a bench and armrest, new, deluxe door panels, and full wheel covers. This first Supreme was also known as the Holiday Sedan. Just one year later, the Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme came into its own and the name represented a full series. The new line-up included a Holiday and a Sport Coupe, a convertible, and a Town Sedan. All members of the line were more luxurious than those in the Cutlass series.

For 1967, the Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme included the optional 442 package: a four-speed transmission, four-barrel carburetor, and dual exhaust. Eventually the 442 would become a stand-alone, upscale muscle car, but at the time it was still a package deal on the Supreme models.

For the Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme second generation, the models got a makeover including shorter wheelbases and a trimmed down set of body types. The 442 became its own nameplate, based on the Cutlass, but the Supreme gained the SX high performance package as a new option. This included the 455-cubic inch V8 rocket engine.

1973 saw a new generation and another redesign for the Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme. Colonnade styling included fixed pillars due to safety concerns with pillarless hardtops. Thanks to the ‘70s oil crisis, the Supremes of this era also had smaller engines, including the 250-cubic inch inline six.

There were to be two more generations for it, but the Supreme was headed on its way out by the 1990s. The older versions of the Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme are highly collectible today, especially those from the ‘60s and models with the performance packages like the 442.
