The Pink Lambo is the Stuff of Legends
If you are fortunate enough to see exotic Italian cars on American roads, you are most likely to see them painted shades of racecar red, sexy black, or brilliant yellow. But, this is not the case for those living along the Hudson River just north of New York City. In the community of Hyde Park, one woman owns an iconic pink Lamborghini Espada.
Over the ten years that the Lamborghini Espada was built, only 1,200 were sold. One lucky owner is Ms. Lorrie Stern who makes her home in Hyde Park. She has owned her Espada since 1973, when she and her husband originally purchased it in green. The car became the family car and the Sterns drove their children and the neighbor children all over town in the Lamborghini. The large trunk made it a useful daily driver for them and occasionally, some children actually rode in the trunk when the seats were too full.
In 1979, Ms. Stern decided to repaint the car and she chose pink because she thought the light color highlighted the Lamborghini Espada’s unique lines. She even had the interior restyled to match the pink exterior during its restoration in 1992. She had white leather and pink carpet added to the interior. While many drivers would cringe at the idea of a pink car, the pink that Ms. Stern chose is quite appealing in its softness.
Along with the unique pink Lamborghini Espada, Ms. Stern has owned several other outstanding automobiles. When she bought the Espada, she was driving a Fiat 124 Spider. Her husband was once an owner of a Citroën SM that had an engine created by Maserati. Her husband was quite a fan of Maseratis and was a part of a Maserati Club; he owned a Quattroporte that he put over 160,000 miles on, too.
Ms. Stern, who became a widow in 2004, had quite an interesting life as a driver. She flew airplanes as an aerobatic pilot. She drove the Lamborghini on the Pocono Speedway and she even drove it in a horrible snowstorm where she drove off the road and thought she would die in the car. She has also won many awards with the car including some that were created just for the pink Lamborghini Espada.
