Not many cars of the early '60s can compete with the stunning good looks of the 1961 chevy bel air. From stock to mildly modified like this one, it's the kind of car that makes people stop and stare and that will never go out of style. Of course, the best customs are the ones that work with the factory styling, so instead of spending their budget on body modifications, the guys who built this one invested in getting the factory sheetmetal laser-straight, and then laying down an amazing roman red finish.combined with a white top that emphasizes the bubbletop design, it's dazzling in person.the few modifications that were done were expertly integrated into the design and are so subtle you may not even notice unless you're a bel air expert or there's a stock one sitting right next to it.
Some of the chrome has been removed, but the cool sweep spear that stretches the length of the body remains, wrapping around the tail to form the edge of the trunk lid.brightly chromed bumpers, original emblems and badges, and a beautifully restored grille give it enough jewelry to sparkle, and all the glass is in excellent shape, including the irreplaceable rear window.the interior is very stock because, again, it's hard to do better than the factory stylists.
Red bench seats are finished with reproduction seat covers, and new carpets installed at the time of restoration. The original dash, gauges, steering wheel, and shifter have all been retained and restored, although the shifter now controls a th350 3-speed automatic instead of the original powerglide.the only noticeable modification is a gauge and control system for the air ride suspension, which has been fitted under the dash.shockingly, even the original am radio is still fitted in the dash.
The trunk is spotless, with a full-sized spare and a reservoir for the air suspension tucked into the corner, leaving plenty of room for luggage. The original 283 is gone, replaced by a 350 cubic inch crate motor dressed in vintage dress-up gear. Finned valve covers match the air cleaner, and a chrome alternator is an easy choice.note how clean the inner fenders are, and that the paint job reaches all the way down the firewall.the block is chevy orange as it should be, and the aluminum intake was polished before being fitted with an edelbrock 4-barrel carburetor.
Power disc brakes with a dual reservoir master cylinder have been added for safety, and power steering is part of the package. Stock style exhaust manifolds dump into a custom-built exhaust system with flowmasters that dump just ahead of the rear wheels.obviously, air ride has been added, giving the suspension unparalleled adjustability and the workmanship is impressive.staggered american racing torque thrust wheels wear 215/40/17 front and positively gigantic 255/35/20 rear performance radials.
