Classic De Tomaso, Classic De Tomaso For Sale

Racecar driver Alejandro de Tomaso founded De Tomaso Modena, an automaker primarily known for their sleek sports cars, after immigrating to Italy from Argentina in 1959. these vehicles were marketed to and widely imported into the United States, where American drivers embraced their unique marriage of exotic European f...lair and high-end performance. Today, they are still prized as classic collector cars.

The four-cylinder Vallelunga sports car, De Tomaso’s debut model, rolled off of the assembly lines in 1963. Taking its name from an Italian racecourse, it is said to have reached a staggering top speed of 134 mph. The Mangusta (Latin for ‘mongoose’) succeeded the Vallelunga in 1967. This V8-equipped sports car featured the memorable idiosyncrasy of rear “gull wing” doors covering its trunk and engine compartment.

The most celebrated classic De Tomaso, however, is most certainly the Pantera (Latin for ‘panther’), which was unveiled in 1971 and produced through 1996, although importation into the United States ended in 1975. Like the Vallelunga, the Pantera sported a Ford V8 engine. It is estimated that only around 7000 Panteras were ever produced, making the Pantera a valuable collectible among automotive enthusiasts. For the collectors lucky enough to own the title to a Pantera, there is even a Pantera Owners Club of America, which has nearly a thousand members.
