The Porsche company is a German concern that has become synonymous with impeccable quality since the company's outset. However, in the earliest days of Porsche, they were not actually in the manufacturing business. They began as a design and consultation firm under the direction of the now legendary Fedinand Porsche. One of the first contracts that company landed was with the German government, for whom they would up designing one of the most recognizable cars that the world has ever known: the Volkswagen Beetle. By the year 1939 Porsche was ready to release the first car to carry their brand name, the Porsche 64 prototype.
After World War II they came out with the Porsche 356, and a lot of people mistakenly believe that this was the very first Porsche, but in fact it is the first one that was actually offered for sale. Subsequently, the Porsche 550 Spyder made a name for itself on the racing circuit, and went on to introduce the Porsche 911 in 1964. As time has gone on, the Porsche name has continued to gain in reputation and prestige. In fact, a Luxury Institute study conducted in 2006 found that the Porsche automobile is considered to be the most prestigious automotive brand. These days Porsche offers the Cayenne, the Porsche Cayman, the Boxster, and the updated version of the Porsche 911 (997).
