Singer

The Singer automobile company was a British concern that began making bicycles in Coventry in 1875. Many of the earliest car makers adapted bicycles or carriages into motorized vehicles, and George Singer was no exception. By 1901 he was making three-wheeled cycles that were motorized, and they kept upgrading their line.

By 1904 Singer was producing typical, standard two-wheel motorcycles, and he started entering them in the races around 1909, and he had a good bit of success that helped move the company forward. In fact, a rider named George Stanley set a record on a Singer motorcycle in 1912, achieving the feat of traveling over sixty miles in sixty minutes on the 350cc Singer.

Singer made cars beginning in 1905, but the Singer 10 was the company's first model that really caught on with the public; this was in 1911. The company built on their achievements from that point forward, lasting through two World Wars and producing a number of classic automobiles, including the Singer Nine, the early Le Mans sports car, the Singer Gazelle, and the Singer Bantam. The Singer automobile company made its mark, and though their last car was made in 1970, Singer classic cars are still in demand to this day.
