The people of Reno, Nevada were looking for a reason to celebrate Rock-n-Roll of the 50’s and 60’s, the baby boomer generation and, of course, cars. They were also looking for a way to fill the void of tourism in August. As they advertise on their site, “the weather was right – HOT; the place was right – RENO; the time was right – AUGUST — HOT AUGUST NIGHTS was born!” When the Hot August Nights held its first event, it was more of a nostalgia event, with the entertainment of Bill Medley from the Righteous Brothers, Wolfman Jack, Bobby Hatfield and Jan & Dean. The organizers learned quickly what seemed to draw more attention – the Friday night car parade. Large crowds were drawn to these “works of art” – and so the car show component became the main event.
This year, Hot August Nights in Reno is celebrating its 25th anniversary. The event will run from August 9th-14th. During each day of the event, there will be show-n-shines with awards at the Atlantic Casino Resort, Bonanza Casino, Circus Circus Casino, Grand Sierra Resort and Peppermill Hotel Casino. The Reno Event Center will hold “Big Boy’s Toy Store” every day, where you can find 300 booths featuring the latest in hot rod, street rod & truck accessories. Admission is free. The Reno-Sparks Convention Center will hold classic car auctions Thursday-Saturday from 8am to 11pm. The Reno-Sparks Livestock Event Center will hold a daily swap meet, as well. Victorian Square in Sparks will be the home for free headliner entertainment Thursday-Saturday, as well as the craft fair and the Ultimate Classic Competition. Finally, there will be car cruises at various locations Wednesday-Saturday nights.
There are also some special events that are being held during Hot August Nights. On Wednesday evening, there will be a Sock Hop at Circus Circus. Admission is $5, or for an extra $1, you can get reserved seating. All proceeds benefit the Hot August Nights Foundation. This foundation supports at-risk children with financial donations for post-secondary education, primary education (K-12) in the case that the child is not completing school, or any other worthy educational program that assists at-risk children. On Thursday evening, Circus Circus will hold the 25th Anniversary Prom; admission is $15. Finally, on Saturday, three locations will hold Celebrity Show-n-Shines.
If you are interested in attending the show, including your car in the show, or being a volunteer or sponsor, see the Hot August Nights website for more information. Accommodation information, entry fees for all events, and location of all events can be found there, as well.
