The 1969 Dodge Charger Daytona
The 1969 Dodge Charger Daytona evolved from Dodge’s Charger fastback, introduced in 1966. The Charger fastback was conceived for the racetrack, but actually performed quite poorly in competition. In 1968 Dodge attempted to spruce it up with rear spoilers for competition models, but even with this improvement it was still considerably slower than its competitors. The aptly named Charger Daytona of 1969 was an attempt to bridge the gap and give Dodge a solid NASCAR contender to compete with superior Ford racing cars.
With the Mustang, Ford created a new class of cars, the pony car. Less performance-oriented and a little easier on the wallet than a muscle car, the pony car represents the best of both worlds. With the production of the Mustang, and subsequent competitors such as the Chevy Camaro and Dodge Challenger, the automotive industry offered consumers sporty cars with some performance characteristics at a price that many could afford.
The 1966 Dodge Charger
The “Leader of the Dodge Rebellion” was introduced at the 1966 Rose Bowl, and although the Dodge brothers didn’t know it at the time, the 1966 Charger would impact muscle car history forever.
The Charger was built off of the Dodge Coronet chassis, but utilized its own body. This introduction was Dodge’s first fastback, high-speed street racer. The 1966 Charger was the first U.S. production vehicle to boast a spoiler, which was implemented to solve the lift that its body created. David Pearson drove a #6 Cotton Owens-prepared Charger, and won the NASCAR Grand National championship in 1966 (in addition to 14 other first-place finishes).
1970 Cuda 440
The 1970 Cuda 440 was just one member of the well-loved line of Barrcuda muscle cars produced by Plymouth from 1964 to 1974. The first generation of Barracudas ran from 1964 to 1966. They were based on the body of the Plymouth Valiant. From 1967 to 1969, the second generation cars were still Valiant-based, but totally redesigned and available in convertible, fastback, and notchback body styles.
Most car enthusiasts know that some of the most rare cars in the world were special ordered with very specific requests and that hundreds of thousands of dollars were spent to make them that way. The cars that were factory-made, but still incredibly rare, get casted in the shadows because they are considered not as glamorous and sold for less money. This article wants to commend these rare, factory-built vehicles and bring them out into the spotlight they deserve.
1971 Plymouth Barracuda
Part of the third and final generation of the nameplate, the 1971 Plymouth Barracuda came with several changes as compared to its predecessors. The original Barracuda came out in 1964 was an A-body, fastback coupe that shared its styling and body with the Plymouth Valiant. The Barracuda came out just as Americans were craving small, sporty coupes, and anything similar to the namesake of the pony car, Ford’s ever-popular Mustang.
To start off the series, we meet Dave Kaeck from American Muscle, who announces that the project will involve a lime green 2005 Mustang Fastback V6. This car is set to receive some modifications to get it running to its full potential.
