1942 DeSoto Convertible
The 1942 DeSoto Convertible is considered to be the rarest and most desireable of all DeSotos.
The 1942 DeSoto was a low-production auto due to WWII. Only 24,771 DeSotos were produced, including 489 convertibles. It was also a "one-year" only model, i.e., the only year DeSoto offered:
- airfoil "hide-away" headlights,
- unique fender skirts,
- translucent, lighted, hood ornament,
- novel park and tail lights,
- distinctive interior door and window crank handles and door trim,
- the Fifth Avenue Edition package, etc.
This 1942 DeSDoto Convertible is/has:
- 1 of 2 (possibly 3) 1942 DeSoto Convertibles known to exist,
- the only 1942 DeSoto Convertible known to have been produced in the Fifth Avenue Edition,
- an un-restored "original" only being re-painted and re-chromed in the mid-1980's. Still looks and shows well,
- the lone cigarette dispenser in the steering wheel,
- the original top which goes up and down easily. Top is worn, rear window glass is excellent, and top provides correct patterns and padding,
- the original leather interior. The seats are covered in 1940's/50's seat covers. I have not taken the seat covers off, so I do not know the condition of the leather. Still, they provide correct upholstery patterns,
- the Fliud Drive transmission which shifts well and stops without depressing the clutch,
- had some drive train work completed including; front suspension rebuilt using NOS parts, new brakes and shocks, new clutch and throw-out bearing, complete rewiring, engine overhaul, radiator cleaned and rodded, new tires and battery.
