Founded in 1909, Maybach-Motorenbau GmnH is a German luxury car manufacturer that currently operates under the ownership of Dailmer AG out of Stuttgart.  The company has its roots in the Zeppelin and railcar industry, where it developed diesel and gas engines that would eventually be used in World War I. a period of ceased production, Mercedes Benz revived the company in 2002.

The first Maybach automobile was an experimental luxury car introduced in 1921 at the Berlin Motor Show.  In the next two decades, Maybach would go on to manufacture some of the most opulent and luxurious automobiles available at that time, such as the 1939 Maybach SW38 Spohn 4 Door Cabriolet.  During WWII, Maybach returned to its roots and began manufacturing engines for self-propelled guns and tanks, such as the Panther and Tiger tanks.  Automotive production at Maybach plants ceased following the war.

In 1997, Mercedes-Benz presented the V12 Mercedes-Benz Maybach luxury concept car at the Tokyo Motorshow with intentions of entering the vehicle into production.  Mercedes made the choice to rebadge the car under the Maybach name, however, which was released in 2002 as the Maybach 57 and 62.  Mercedes-Benz continues to manufacture some of the world’s most luxurious automobiles under the Maybach name.
